VET – Music Industry

Learning at SRCS

Sydney Road Community School is a student-focused, supportive educational environment. We are renowned for the close, respectful and supportive connections between students and staff, as well as for our efforts to create a sense of belonging and success in every student. Our school has a tradition of excellence in equity, diversity, individuality, community and student safety.

Change to VET Music in 2017

At SRCS we offer this Certificate III in Music Industry to include content from each of the Music Performance, Technical Production and Music Business streams. This enables us to provide a broad curriculum which is in line with current music industry practices.

The skills I learnt and the experience I gained from SRCS’s VET Music Industry subject form the foundation of my work as a live engineer. Matt and Dan always focused on learning to apply the theory we were learning, which I found invaluable and a skill I’ve been able to able to carry forward. Also, they always encouraged you to do the best work you can. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone interested in pursuing any aspect of music as a career!” – Elizabeth

Our Trainers

Our experienced trainers are active in building creative communities both in and out of the school environment; Dan West (following a ten-year tenure as Arts Centre Melbourne’s Youth Programmer) currently operates the Yarra Youth Services Recording Studio as part of the Rising High music program. Matt Ridgway is an Ableton Certified Trainer who in addition to his work at SRCS, also runs monthly music production workshops at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Ableton User Group, has taught at JMC Academy and School of Synthesis.

Both Matt and Dan are working musicians and sound designers, with over twenty years experience in the Music Industry. Between them, they have been nominated for ARIA awards, and have won Awards for game sound design.

Our Facilities

Established Australian studio designer Dave Flett designed SRCS’s recording studio which is housed in the old church building on-site at SRCS. Our recording spaces features both ‘live’ and ‘dead’ spaces as well as a unique performance area in the main space.

All students have access to Mac laptops, Ableton Push Controllers and Audio Interfaces. We utilise these tools and cloud-based technology to facilitate high-level, creative education experience for our students that they are able to access anywhere with an internet connection.

Industry Connection & Sponsorship

We have strong connections to the Ableton Education Initiative, which has allowed for product sponsorship receiving sixteen refurbished Push Controllers and software licensing for the entire VET Music program. Our trainers have ongoing professional relationships with a number of organisations and companies within the Australian and International music industry that we draw upon.

Current Practices

The SRCS music program is unique in that we have trainers that are able to provide an Electronic Music production and performance focus to our course that allows our students to access techniques to be able to write, produce, perform and release their own work.
